Jobs went on to describe the legacy he hoped he would leave behind, "a company that will still stand for something a generation or two from now."

"That's what Walt Disney did," said Jobs, "and Hewlett and Packard, and the people who built Intel. They created a company to last, not just to make money. That's what I want Apple to be."

He also stated the importance of helping Silicon Valley's next generation--the Larry Pages and Sergey Brins, the Mark Zuckerbergs. "That's how I'm going to spend part of the time I have left," Jobs told Isaacson two months before his death. "I can help the next generation remember the lineage of great companies here and how to continue the tradition. The Valley has been very supportive of me. I should do my best to repay."

During his near decade-long absence from Apple, Jobs also purchased a graphics company that would grow to become one of Hollywood's most successful animation studios. That company was Pixar. Even after he returned to Apple, Jobs continued to serve as CEO of the Pixar juggernaut for a time.

Jobs has credited his dramatic ouster from Apple as the key to his success with Pixar and his later success upon his return to Apple. In 2005, said the following, during a moving commencement

Steve Jobs Biography Reveals He Told Obama, 'You're Headed For A One-Term Presidency'

In one of the most hotly-anticipated biographies of the year, "Steve Jobs," author Walter Isaacson reveals that the Apple CEO offered to design political ads for President Obama's 2012 campaign despite being highly critical of the administration's policies and that Jobs refused potentially life-saving surgery on his pancreatic cancer because he felt it was too invasive. Nine months later, he got the operation but it was too late.

Those are just some of the tidbits about Jobs' life revealed in the upcoming biography, a copy of which was obtained by The Huffington Post. The publication date of the official biography of the notoriously-secretive Apple co-founder was pushed up after his death in October. "I wanted my kids to know me," Isaacson quoted Jobs as saying in their final interview. "I wasn't always there for them and I wanted them to know why and to understand what I did."

Among other details unearthed in the book on the notoriously-secretive Apple co-founder:

Jobs' Meeting With Obama

Jobs, who was known for his prickly, stubborn personality, almost missed meeting President Obama in the fall of 2010 because he insisted that the president personally ask him for a meeting. Though his wife told him that Obama "was really psyched to meet with you," Jobs insisted on the personal invitation, and the standoff lasted for five days. When he finally relented and they met at the Westin San Francisco Airport, Jobs was characteristically blunt. He seemed to have transformed from a liberal into a conservative.

"You're headed for a one-term presidency," he told Obama at the start of their meeting, insisting that the administration needed to be more business-friendly. As an example, Jobs described the ease with which companies can build factories in China compared to the United States, where "regulations and unnecessary costs" make it difficult for them.

Jobs also criticized America's education system, saying it was "crippled by union work rules," noted Isaacson. "Until the teachers' unions were broken, there was almost no hope for education reform." Jobs proposed allowing principals to hire and fire teachers based on merit, that schools stay open until 6 p.m. and that they be open 11 months a year.

Aiding Obama's Reelection Campaign

Jobs suggested that Obama meet six or seven other CEOs who could express the needs of innovative businesses -- but when White House aides added more names to the list, Jobs insisted that it was growing too big and that "he had no intention of coming." In preparation for the dinner, Jobs exhibited his notorious attention to detail, telling venture capitalist John Doerr that the menu of shrimp, cod and lentil salad was "far too fancy" and objecting to a chocolate truffle dessert. But he was overruled by the White House, which cited the president's fondness for cream pie.

Though Jobs was not that impressed by Obama, later telling Isaacson that his focus on the reasons that things can't get done "infuriates" him, they kept in touch and talked by phone a few more times. Jobs even offered to help create Obama's political ads for the 2012 campaign. "He had made the same offer in 2008, but he'd become annoyed when Obama's strategist David Axelrod wasn't totally deferential," writes Isaacson. Jobs later told the author that he wanted to do for Obama what the legendary "morning in America" ads did for Ronald Reagan.

Bill Gates And Steve Jobs

Bill Gates was fascinated by Steve Jobs but found him "fundamentally odd" and "weirdly flawed as a human being," and his tendency to be "either in the mode of saying you were shit or trying to seduce you."

Jobs once declared about Gates, "He'd be a broader guy if he had dropped acid once or gone off to an ashram when he was younger."

After 30 years, Gates would develop a grudging respect for Jobs. "He really never knew much about technology, but he had an amazing instinct for what works," he said. But Jobs never reciprocated by fully appreciating Gates' real strengths. "Bill is basically unimaginative and has never invented anything, which is why I think he's more comfortable now in philanthropy than technology. He just shamelessly ripped off other people's ideas."

Meeting His Biological Father

Jobs, who was adopted, was a customer at a Mediterranean restaurant north of San Jose without realizing that it was owned by his biological father -- from whom he was estranged. He eventually met his real Dad -- "It was amazing," he later said of the revelation. "I had been to that restaurant a few times, and I remember meeting the owner. He was Syrian. Balding. We shook hands."

Nevertheless Jobs still had no desire to see him. "I was a wealthy man by then, and I didn't trust him not to try to blackmail me or go to the press about it."

Anticipating An Early Death

Jobs once told John Sculley, who would later become Apple's CEO and fire Jobs, that if he weren't working with computers, he could see himself as a poet in Paris. "Jobs confided in Sculley that he believed he would die young, and therefore he needed to accomplish things quickly so that he would make his mark on Silicon Valley history. "We all have a short period of time on this earth," he told the Sculleys. "We probably only have the opportunity to do a few things really great and do them well. None of us has any idea how long we're gong to be here nor do I, but my feeling is I've got to accomplish a lot of these things while I'm young."

For his first interview about the book, Isaacson talked to "60 Minutes" for the Sunday, Oct. 23 episode, telling host Steve Kroft that he was shocked about Jobs's decision to initially skip surgery for his pancreatic cancer -- that such a genius could make such a wrong decision about his own health.

"I've asked [Jobs why he didn't get an operation then] and he said, 'I didn't want my body to be opened ... I didn't want to be violated in that way,' said Isaacson.

"I think that he kind of felt that if you ignore something, if you don't want something to exist, you can have magical thinking. ... We talked about this a lot," he told Kroft. "He wanted to talk about it, how he regretted it. ... I think he felt he should have been operated on sooner." Shared From=>

 Steve Jobs: Apple Stores Close for Celebration of CEO's Life

Though the new iPhone 4S has drawn lines at Apple stores across the country, many of those stores are quiet today today as the company marks the passing of Steve Jobs.

Apple confirmed to ABC News that Apple stores would close at 1 p.m. ET today while a "celebration of Steve Jobs' life" was held at an outdoor amphitheater at Apple headquarters in California. The memorial was expected to last about 90 minutes, and employees were invited to watch video of it on a live webcast. The event was closed to the public and the news media.

Jobs died on Oct. 5, surrounded by family, after a long battle with cancer. He was first diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer in 2004, and traveled to Tennessee for a liver transplant in 2009. His funeral was on Oct. 7, and there was a private memorial service this past weekend.

Apple, meanwhile, keeps moving on. It reported impressive earnings Tuesday for the last quarter -- profits up 54 percent and sales up 39 percent -- but because it missed analysts' expectations for the first time since 2004, Apple stock dropped when the market opened today.

Apple said sales of the iPhone 4 slowed as customers waited for the release of the iPhone 4S last week. The company said the new phone was a rousing success, with more than 4 million sold in the first three days.

Jobs co-founded Apple Computer in 1976 and, with his childhood friend Steve Wozniak, marketed what was considered the world's first successful personal computer, the Apple II.

Industry watchers called Jobs a master innovator -- perhaps on a par with Thomas Edison -- changing the worlds of computing, recorded music and communications.

2011 October 5 Steve Jobs died in his home from complication of a rare form of cancer.  His family reportedly stated that he died peacefully.

2011 October 9 Steve Jobs official death certificate from the Santa Clara County Public Health Department in San Jose, California states the following facts:

1. Steve died of a respiratory arrest brought on by a metastatic pancreas neuroendocrine tumor.

2. His occupation was listed as entrepreneur.

2011 October 9 The company will hold a celebration of Steve Jobs life.

Apple issued a statement on his death as follows: 

We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today.

Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives.  The world is immeasurably better because of Steve

His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family.  Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary life.

Steve Jobs is survived by his wife, Laurene and their three children, Lisa Brannan-Jobs, a daughter from a previous relationship, his biological mother, and his sister Mona Simpson.  You can view his information on Apple's corporate website.

A small private funeral was held on October 7, 2011 and he was buried in a non-denominational cemetery on October 7, 2011.

It is said his death occurred at 3 PM on October the fifth and that no autopsy was performed.

 Steve Jobs' Cause Of Death Was Respiratory Arrest, Report Says

According to Steve Jobs' death certificate, issued Monday by the Santa Clara County Public Health Department, respiratory arrest brought on by a "metastatic pancreas neuroendocrine tumor" was the official cause of the Apple co-founder's death on October 5, Bloomberg News reported.

Bloomberg also noted that Jobs' occupation was listed as "entrepreneur" on his death certificate.

In a statement issued October 5, Jobs' family did not specify the cause of death, but noted that Jobs "died peacefully today surrounded by his family."

Jobs had battled with his illness for several years and the AP notes that Jobs "lived more than seven years after being diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumor –- a less common, slower-growing and more treatable type of pancreatic cancer."

Jobs first publicly disclosed his health problems in 2004, the same year he underwent surgery to remove a tumor from his pancreas and took a medical leave of absence. He had a liver transplant in 2009 and took a second medical leave of absence that year, then another this year.

Jobs resigned as Apple's CEO in August as his health continued to deteriorate.

"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know," wrote Jobs in the letter announcing his resignation. "Unfortunately, that day has come."



According to the American Cancer Society, almost the same number of people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer as die from it each year: The American Cancer Society estimates that "44,030 new cases of pancreatic cancer are expected to occur in the US in 2011" while "37,660 deaths are expected to occur" in the same year.

Even for those diagnosed before the disease has spread beyond the pancreas, there is only a 23 percent five-year survival rate, the American Cancer Society notes.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Jobs' funeral, described as a "small private gathering," had been held that same day.

Apple CEO Tim Cook wrote in an email to Apple employees released Monday by Reuters that the company would hold a celebration of Jobs' life on Wednesday, October 19.

"Like many of you, I have experienced the saddest days of my lifetime and shed many tears during the past week," Cook wrote, according to Reuters. "And I've found comfort in both telling and listening to stories about Steve."

Casey Anthony was back in court Saturday morning for a defamation lawsuit brought against her. She gave evidence by video and wore a disguise consisting of a wig, sunglasses and a baseball cap.

The lawsuit has been brought by Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez. During the police investigation into the disappearance of Anthony’s two-year-old daughter Caylee, Anthony lied and blamed a fictitious nanny of the same name.

During the court hearing, Anthony’s lawyer invoked the Fifth Amendment a number of times; which grants the right not to self-incriminate oneself.

Anthony joined by video from a secret location in Florida wearing a Philadelphia Philllies baseball cap, as well as a pair of “gigantic sunglasses,” according to The Daily Mail. She also wore a dark-haired wig to complete what numerous reports are describing as a very peculiar disguise.

Anthony was questioned for about 45 minutes but most answers were blocked by the Fifth Amendment.

Fernandez-Gonzalez's lawyer John Morgan claimed that Anthony came up with the name of the fictitious nanny after both women visited the same Florida apartment complex on the same day.

According to ABC News, she claims that Anthony’s lies caused her to lose her home and job because people thought she was involved in Caylee's abduction.

Fernandez-Gonzalez received death threats and phone calls in which she and her children were threatened, her lawyers claim.

Westboro Baptist Church uses iPhone to announce protest at Steve Jobs’s funeral

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church picket every Sunday at a city park near their church in Topeka, KS. (Michael S. Williamson - THE WASHINGTON POST) Westboro Baptist Church announced plans Wednesday night to protest Steve Jobs’s funeral, sending the message out. . .wait for it. . . via Twitter for iPhone.

Margie Phelps, daughter of the small church’s founder and the lawyer who represented the church during their First Amendment case at the Supreme Court, (which Westboro won,) was among the Phelps family members to use Apple products to Tweet about the death of the Apple co-founder.

“Westboro will picket his funeral.He had a huge platform; gave God no glory & taught sin,” Margie tweeted Wednesday night on her iPhone.

The Topeka, Kan. based church is mostly made up of Phelps family members but has risen to international infamy because of their funeral protests of celebrities and American soldiers. The church’s members believe that God punishes America for its tolerance of sin, including acceptance of homosexuality.

The iPhone-wielding Westboro members seemed unable to find any irony in their embrace of the technology of a man they condemn. One church member even suggested that God was using Jobs to help advance the message of Westboro Baptist Church: “God used Steve Jobs to create amazing STUFF for WBC to preach,” wrote Shirley Phelps-Roper. read story here

Steve Jobs' death a reminder that pancreatic cancer’s toll is still too high

When Carnegie Mellon professor Randy Pausch died of pancreatic cancer in 2008, many people were both saddened by his loss and hopeful that his very public experience with this ghastly disease might prompt a race for the cure.

But medicine moves slowly. With the loss of Steve Jobs and, just weeks before him, Nobel Prize recipient Ralph Steinman, we’re struck again by the fact that pancreatic cancers are a horribly tough nut to crack.

As with everything he did, Steve Jobs surpassed expectations and forged new territory in surviving his disease, described as a rare form of neuroendocrine tumor on his pancreas, for more than five years. But his was an exceptional case.

The five-year survival rate for the more common form of pancreatic cancer is less than 4 percent, according to the American Cancer Society. That’s because there’s no way (yet) to detect it early: It creeps up quietly, not causing noticeable symptoms until the tumor on the pancreas has grown too large to be surgically removed or the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, typically the liver.

An estimated 44,030 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the U.S. in 2011; 37,660 of them will die from the disease, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Despite some recent developments in detecting and treating pancreatic cancer, the numbers haven’t budged in years. As the CDC reported in 2010, between 1999 and 2007, the death rate “decreased by 9.6 percent for lung cancer, 23.9 percent for prostate cancer, 15.2 percent for breast cancer, and 19.6 percent for colon cancer. The death rate for pancreatic cancer did not change significantly during this period.”

As I wrote when Pausch died, pancreatic cancer research doesn’t attract the attention that many of us think it should. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t scientists out there working hard to crack this nut and others working to raise awareness and provide support for those affected by this disease. But finding ways to detect pancreatic cancer early enough to make a difference, to effectively treat it, to improve survival rates -- or even to prevent it -- will require the kind of tenacity and visionary thinking that Steve Jobs brought to the table.
